This is a common theme when it comes to using food as medicine and the science behind it. It’s unfortunate that science today is dominated by the pharmaceutical industry, and that most of the research received by physicians in the Western world comes directly from pharmaceutical companies. Study Finds No Link between Saturated Fat Intake and Heart Disease Risk
If you currently limit your intake of butter, full fat dairy produce and meat, and carefully check food labels for the amount of saturated fat they contain, you’re not alone. For decades we have been told by health experts to cut back our intake of saturated fats to reduce our risk of cardiovascular problems and instead choose foods rich in unsaturated fats such as vegetable oils, nuts, seeds, avocados and oily fish. However, new research, published in the Annals of Internal Medicine, has cast some doubt on the benefit of limiting the amount of saturated fat in our diet.

Oil Pulling: The Hot New Health and Beauty Craze
By Shereen Dindar | Shine — Tue, Mar 18, 2014 11:46 AM EDT
An age old health and beauty regimen has become the talk of the Internet. This week, the term “Oil Pulling” is trending on social media and on search engines (it’s spiking by 1331% on Yahoo). If you’ve been wondering just what oil pulling is, here’s a breakdown.
The term may sound like a very complicated, but all it really involves is swishing oil around in your mouth once a day. The ancient Ayurvedic practice requires you to gargle a teaspoon to a tablespoon of natural, cold-pressed oil in your mouth for 20 minutes. Most people prefer to use coconut oil because of the taste. Once you are done, you spit out the oil and brush your teeth, reports Style Caster.
It is believed that the oil absorbs toxins and bacteria in the mouth, preventing them from being absorbed into the body.

Coconut oil commonly gets namedropped as the latest super-good-for-you miracle product. Admittedly, a year ago we’d barely heard of coconut oil. Maybe in our vegetable green curry or as an ingredient relegated to the shelves of the local health food store, but not something we were putting on our face. Not yet at least.
But when we started our beauty street style column about a year ago, we could barely go a week without one of the girls we photographed naming coconut oil as her go-to beauty product. Our glowing, shiny-haired subjects rattled off the different ways they used the super oil: as a nourishing face cream, repairing leave-in conditioner or beachy-scented body moisturizer.
